SITE were engaged by the developer for our unique exploratory approach and research process for this challenging urban design. After several attempts by others, SITE’s design process revealed a concept drawn from extensive study and visits to European rural villages to create opportunity for the local residents to reflect and reconnect with their historical roots.
Asked to investigate ways to establish a central civic space within a rural residential development between Yallingup and Dunsborough in WA’s South West, we drew inspiration from traditional European village squares and piazzas.
We arranged potential retail, commercial and residential buildings to exclude vehicles and promote pedestrian alleys and through-routes.
We plotted the likely movements of people as they walk through the area to identify places where they would naturally congregate.
In these mixed-use spaces and through alleys, courtyards and streets, we investigated ways to activate areas to create interest and delight.
Set to become an activated village centre where people gravitate to socialise, relax and shop, the result is a harmonious amalgamation of shared community facilities, retail offerings and homes.
