Client : Swan Christian Education Association
Southern Hills Christian College, formerly known as Armadale Christian College engaged SITE for this project after successfully proving our ability to provide economical, site specific and high quality educational facility design solutions for the client. The project was delivered at a significantly lower cost of similar facilities at their other campuses and provides a number of innovative passive ESD initiatives.
Serving as a multi-purpose venue for the college by day and the community by night, this Bedfordale sporting pavilion sits comfortably in its physical context.
Taking advantage of the naturally wooded surrounds, the simple and economic design is dominated by translucent cladding that negates artificial lighting in the day and serves as a lantern at night – guiding users through the trees to the site after hours.
Rather than resembling an enormous closed shed, the structure has a strong relationship with the college while maintaining independence for the local community.
Funded through the Australian Government’s Building the Education Revolution, the project replaced existing hard courts which were in poor condition.
Taking into consideration the future master plan for the college and potential further community focus of the pavilion and sports grounds, the building features a number of sustainability initiatives.
Natural ventilation is drawn throughout the building via large roof mounted vents and rainwater is captured for reuse through a single oversized gutter.
